Buying guide
Garage door opener types: chain, belt or wall-mount?
Belt-drive openers are the quiet, all-round choice for attached garages. Chain drives are the budget workhorse. Wall-mount openers free up the ceiling and are the quietest of all, but they need torsion springs. In California, every new opener must have a battery backup.
The main types
| Type | Noise | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain drive | Loudest | Detached garages, tight budgets | Durable and simple |
| Belt drive | Quiet | Attached garages, rooms above | The common upgrade |
| Screw drive | Medium | Few moving parts | Less common today |
| Direct drive | Quiet | Smooth operation | Motor travels on the rail |
| Wall-mount (jackshaft) | Quietest at the door | Clear ceilings, high-lift tracks, storage | Mounts beside the door; needs torsion springs |
California's battery backup rule
Since July 1, 2019, a residential garage door opener sold or installed in California must have a battery backup, so the door still works during a power outage. The law (SB 969) followed the 2017 wildfires, when some residents couldn't get their cars out. A replacement door connected to an existing opener without battery backup can also trigger the rule, so ask about it when you replace a door.
Features worth having
- Battery backup (required in California for new installs).
- Smartphone control and alerts so you can check and close the door from anywhere.
- Keypad for entry without a remote.
- Motion-sensing lights and bright LED lighting.
- Rolling-code security so the remote's code can't be copied.
- DC motors with soft start and stop, which are quieter and gentler on the door.
Horsepower and door size
Most single and double residential doors are handled by standard residential openers. What matters more is that the door is balanced: a balanced door is light enough to lift by hand, and the opener only guides it. An opener fighting a heavy, unbalanced door wears out fast, and a stronger motor can hide a dangerous spring problem.
Questions
What is the quietest type of garage door opener?
Wall-mount (jackshaft) openers are the quietest at the door; belt-drive openers are the quietest of the ceiling-mounted types.
Can any garage door use a wall-mount opener?
They need a torsion spring system, the right side clearance next to the door, and usually power nearby. Doors with extension springs can be converted first.
How long do garage door openers last?
Many last 10 to 15 years or more, depending on use and on how well the door is balanced.
Do I have to replace my opener when I replace my door?
Not always. But in California, connecting a new door to an old opener without battery backup can trigger the battery backup requirement, and a heavier door may need a stronger opener.
