Emergency guide

Garage door stuck open: how to secure it tonight

First figure out why it's stuck. If the power is out or the opener failed, the door can usually be closed by hand. If a spring or cable broke, or the door is crooked, don't try to force it down; call for help.

Step 1: Look before you pull anything

  • Springs: is there a gap in the coil on the bar above the door?
  • Cables: is one hanging loose or off its drum?
  • Door: is it level, with all rollers in the tracks?

If any of those look wrong, don't pull the emergency release. With a broken spring or cable, the door's full weight can come down the moment it's disconnected. Keep everyone clear and call us. We're open 24/7.

Step 2: If it's a power outage or a dead opener

  1. If your opener has battery backup, try the wall button; it may still run.
  2. With springs and cables OK, pull the red emergency release cord while the door is fully open, so it can't drop on its own. Pull it straight down.
  3. Lower the door by hand with both hands on the handle or the bottom section, keeping fingers out of the joints between sections.
  4. Lock it with the manual side lock, if your door has one, or clamp locking pliers on the track just above a roller on each side.
  5. When power returns, reconnect the trolley (most reconnect when you run the opener) and test the door.

Step 3: If the door goes down and comes back up

That's usually the safety sensors. Try holding the wall button down all the way until the door is closed. See door won't close for the fix.

Questions

How do I close my garage door when the power is out?

If the springs and cables look fine, pull the red emergency release with the door fully open and lower the door by hand. Lock it with the side lock or clamps on the tracks.

Is it safe to pull the emergency release?

It's safe when the door is balanced and the springs and cables are intact. If a spring is broken, the door can fall as soon as it's released.
